Moving Between Queens and Brooklyn: The BQE, New Truck Routes and Building Types

Updated October 11, 2026

Queens movers since 1999: family run, licensed and insured.

Updated October 11, 2026

Queens and Brooklyn share a long border, from Newtown Creek in Long Island City to Ridgewood and the Cypress Hills area. Moves between the two boroughs are common and usually short, but the route and the buildings on each end make the difference.

The main route is the BQE, not the parkways

The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway is an expressway, so moving trucks can use it. The parkways nearby are a different story: NYC DOT lists the Belt Parkway, the Jackie Robinson Parkway and Ocean Parkway among the roads closed to commercial vehicles, along with the Grand Central Parkway, except the stretch between the Robert F. Kennedy (Triborough) Bridge and the western leg of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. On local streets, a moving truck stays on the truck route network and leaves it only to reach the stop.

Truck routes near the border changed on October 4, 2026

NYC DOT finalized changes to the truck route network that took effect on October 4, 2026; a new truck route map is due in 2027. Near the Queens-Brooklyn line the list adds Maspeth Avenue between Page Place and 48th Street, Borden Avenue between 60th Street and Grand Avenue, 43rd Street between 56th Road and 54th Avenue, and Starr Avenue between Van Dam Street and the Long Island Expressway. In Ridgewood and Glendale it adds St. Felix Avenue between Cypress Avenue and Cooper Avenue and Cooper Avenue between 66th Street and Cypress Hills Street. It removes Rust Street between Grand Avenue and Flushing Avenue. Your crew plans the approach to your block with the current list, not an old map.

Brownstones on one end, walk-ups on the other

Many Brooklyn moves start or end in a brownstone or row house with a stoop and narrow interior stairs. Many Queens moves involve two-family houses, prewar walk-ups, co-ops or newer elevator buildings. For any of them, measure stair turns and doors, and tell us about sofas, sectionals, armoires and anything over six feet. Bed frames and tables usually come apart; heavy pieces like safes and pianos need extra people and time.

Parking on both ends

Alternate side parking applies on many blocks in both boroughs, and on suspension days parked cars tend to stay all day. Plan an early start, and tell us about hydrants, bus stops, driveways and anything else near the door that changes where the truck can stop. If one building has a loading zone or a driveway, say so in advance.

A short checklist for a Queens-Brooklyn move

Ask both buildings about move hours, elevators and COIs a week before. Label boxes by room on two sides. Keep valuables, documents and medicine with you. Walk through the empty rooms before the truck leaves, and at the new home show the crew where each room is so boxes go straight where they belong.

Common questions

Can a moving truck use the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway?

Yes. The BQE is an expressway. Parkways such as the Belt, the Jackie Robinson and Ocean Parkway are closed to commercial vehicles.

Which truck routes changed near Maspeth and Ridgewood?

From October 4, 2026, NYC DOT added segments of Maspeth Avenue, Borden Avenue, 43rd Street, Starr Avenue, St. Felix Avenue and Cooper Avenue, and removed Rust Street between Grand and Flushing Avenues.

Do I need a COI to move into a Brooklyn brownstone?

A private house usually does not ask for one. Co-ops, condos and rental buildings often do; ask management for their sample.

Is a Queens to Brooklyn move a local move?

Yes. It stays inside New York City and New York State.
