Moving in Jackson Heights and Elmhurst: Co-op Garden Apartments and Busy Streets

Updated October 10, 2026

Jackson Heights is known for its garden apartment co-ops; Elmhurst next door has a mix of apartment buildings and houses on busy streets. Both reward a little planning with the building and the curb.

Jackson Heights: a historic district of garden apartments

Jackson Heights was designated a New York City and national historic district in 1993, largely because of its garden apartment buildings: large co-op buildings with internal courtyard gardens. For a move, the courtyard can mean a longer carry, and the co-op will have rules for moving days and hours.

Co-op and building rules

Ask the managing agent: which days and hours are allowed, whether a deposit or fee applies, whether a COI is required and what it must say, and whether the board has to approve your move-in date. Send us the COI sample a week before; we send the certificate your building asks for.

Elmhurst: plan around traffic and the curb

Elmhurst streets near the commercial corridors are busy all day. A morning start helps, and so does a plan for where the truck can stop. Tell us about hydrants, bus stops and driveways near your door. On alternate side parking suspension days, parked cars tend to stay all day.

Routes for the truck

The Long Island Expressway and the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway serve both neighborhoods and are open to trucks. The Grand Central Parkway is closed to commercial vehicles except the stretch between the RFK Bridge and the western leg of the BQE. Inside the neighborhood, a truck uses designated truck routes and leaves them only to reach the stop.

A short checklist for Jackson Heights and Elmhurst

Ask the managing agent for the move rules in writing, including the allowed hours. Reserve the elevator if there is one and pad it if the building asks. Label boxes by room on two sides. Keep valuables, documents and medicine with you. If you are moving into a courtyard building, tell us which entrance is closest to your apartment so the carry is as short as possible, and check whether a gate needs a key or a code.

Common questions

Is Jackson Heights a historic district?

Yes. It was designated a New York City and national historic district in 1993, mainly for its garden apartment buildings.

Do I need board approval to move into a Jackson Heights co-op?

Many co-ops set move dates and rules. Ask your managing agent before you book the movers.

What does a COI need to say?

Whatever your building sample says, usually the certificate holder and the parties listed as additional insured. Send the sample to your mover early.

Can the truck park on the street in Elmhurst?

Where legal. Busy corridors make it hard, so plan an early start and tell your mover about the block.
