Long-Distance Moves To or From Queens: Licenses, Estimates and Your Rights

Updated October 11, 2026

Queens movers since 1999: family run, licensed and insured.

Updated October 11, 2026

A long-distance move is planned differently from a move across Queens. Once your belongings cross a state line, federal rules decide what the mover must give you and how the final bill works. Knowing them protects you from most bad surprises.

Check the mover first

Interstate household goods movers must be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and have a U.S. DOT number. Ours is U.S. DOT 967970, and you can look it up on FMCSA’s SAFER system. Some companies that sell moves are brokers that pass the job to another company; ask who will actually load and drive your things, and ask for that company’s DOT number.

The paperwork you should get

Before the move, an interstate mover must give you FMCSA’s booklet Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move and the Ready to Move? brochure, a written estimate, and information about the claims process and dispute settlement. Before loading you sign an order for service; at loading the crew makes an inventory and you get a bill of lading. Read the inventory before you sign it and keep copies of everything.

Binding and non-binding estimates

A binding estimate fixes the cost of the goods and services it describes. A non-binding estimate is the mover’s best guess; under FMCSA rules the mover cannot make you pay more than 110 percent of a non-binding estimate at delivery, and any remaining charges are billed later. Either way, an accurate list of what is moving, plus the floors, elevators and carry distance on both ends, is what makes an estimate reliable.

Valuation: how your things are covered

Interstate movers offer two levels of liability. Released value is included at no extra charge but covers only up to 60 cents per pound per article. Full value protection makes the mover liable for the replacement value of lost or damaged goods, within the limits of the contract. Our guide on released vs. full value protection explains the difference.

Moving into Queens from another state

If you are coming to Queens, the New York DMV says new residents must exchange an out-of-state driver license within 30 days of becoming a resident. Elevator buildings in Queens usually ask for a booked move time and a certificate of insurance, so send the building’s COI sample to your mover early, and plan where a long-distance truck can stop.
